US Open is in the bag

It doesn’t matter if Chambers Bay Golf Course is losing money. It doesn’t matter whether there’s a permanent clubhouse. The U.S. Open is coming to Chambers Bay in 2015. And it might not be the last time.

Believe it, Pierce County.

So says Mike Davis, senior director of rules and competitions for the United State Golf Association.

The association picked Chambers Bay to host the U.S. Open and this year’s U.S. Amateur Championship. It’s Davis’ job to make sure the course is ready for the best golfers in the world.

“We’re elated with the progress,” Davis said in a recent interview.

Two years ago, when the association said Chambers Bay would host the U.S. Open, it caught many by surprise.

Chambers Bay had gained national attention, but it was less than a year old. It had been 38 years since a relatively new course had hosted the championship. The U.S. Open had never been held in the Pacific Northwest. And only two other public courses had ever hosted the championship.

Since the announcement, the accolades have continued. But some locals still think it’s too good to be true.

Hunter George, Pierce County’s communications director, said he sometimes hears doubts that the U.S. Open will really happen here when he speaks to community groups. The skeptics cite Chambers Bay’s lack of a permanent clubhouse or its recent budget problems.

Neither is a concern for the United States Golf Association, Davis said. In this economy, public courses, private clubs and golf resorts all are suffering, he said.

Even if Chambers Bay lost money for years, revenue from the U.S. Open would keep the course afloat, Davis said.

Pierce County has tried – so far in vain – to find a private developer to build a permanent clubhouse, lodging and other facilities at Chambers Bay. The county is negotiating cheap flights from Bundaberg to Melbourne (All Airports) with a California developer who is trying …continue reading

MPs pay as donations dry up

February 5th, 2010 by tanaikean

Source: The Age (Original Article)

FEDERAL government MPs donated more than $200,000 to their own party last financial year amid growing concern about ailing campaign finances for both sides of politics heading into an election year.
Annual returns released by the Australian Electoral Commission reveal donations to political parties slumped sharply as the financial crisis intensified.
The ALP collected $10.3 million in direct donations, a far cry from the $25.6 million collected in the 2007-08 election period. Liberal Party donations totalled $6.4 million in 2008-09, about 60 per cent less than the $16.3 million raised in 2005-06. The Nationals disclosed donations totalling just $913,074.
Labor last year failed in its attempt to lower the disclosure threshold for donations from $10,900 to $1000. Despite this, it voluntarily reported all donations it received above $1000.
That meant for first time the returns revealed that a significant chunk of Labor’s funds came from MPs themselves, under a convention requiring Labor MPs to contribute an annual fee of at least $1650 – equivalent to about 1.3 per cent of a backbencher’s base pay of $127,060.
Most Labor MPs, including Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard, chipped in the minimum amount, although some paid considerably more.
Damian Hale, who holds the highly marginal Northern Territory seat of Solomon, contributed $6710, while Western Australia senator Glenn Sterle donated $6285. Canberra senator Kate Lundy donated $3300 and Northern Territory senator Trish Crossin $6050.
All up, Labor MPs contributed $202,680 for the party. It remains unclear whether any Liberal MPs made similar donations, because there is no requirement to declare contributions of less than $10,900.
But a Liberal source said most coalition MPs tended to support the party through fund-raising events, rather than directly. ”Unlike Labor, we are not forced to do anything,” the source said.
